Local boy – Lembah Pantai

Dato Raja Nong Chik or RNC as he is affectionately known to his friends, is a true local boy. He has always lived in Kuala Lumpur and spent most of his teenage years in Lorong Limau Manis 2, Bangsar. In his early childhood RNC was brought up by his grandparents who lived in Ampang Hilir. His grandfather was the first chairman of the Election Commission of Malaysia, and also Keeper of the Rulers' Seal.

The Lorong Limau Manis 2 house certainly brings back many happy memories for RNC, because it was at that house he got married to his wife Nafesah, who is a Chinese. RNC still fondly remembers the memories of the courting process by accompanying her to the Chinese Pudu night market back then in 1972! And now they are blessed with two lovely children.

Lembah Pantai has always been the place where it all began for RNC. His social and political activism all started there. From his humble beginnings of starting out as a junior auditor, to establishing himself in the business field, RNC has seen how Lembah Pantai has transformed itself. He remembers the days when he started out in his social activism work during his early 30's. Lembah Pantai was filled with squatters. Flooding and fire breakouts were a common theme in the area. The place is now a vibrant and modern neighborhood. He feels proud to have come from here and witnessing the changes that have occurred over the years.

Entrepreneur

RNC's education began in Methodist Boys School, before going to Victoria Institution (VI) and the Royal Military College (RMC). He later qualified as an accountant in the UK. His diverse educational background has lead him to understand and garner close friendship till today with friends from all races. However, above all, the best insight he gets comes from his wife, where he not only understands her way of life but he also shares it with her.

Dato' Raja Nong Chik often joke about him being the favourite son in law as both himself and his parents in law do not understand much of each other due to language barriers. Hence, they could hardly communicate with each other apart from exchanging a wide smile and he would always remain in their good books.

RNC has had numerous business ventures and advisors over the years. However, he most fondly remembers the advice of Mr Liu Wan Min whom he considers as one of his mentors, who taught him Sun Tzu and the positive values that his messages carries. Before serving in his current government position, RNC sat on the boards of a few listed corporations including Pharmaniaga Berhad, OYL Industries Bhd and icapital.biz Berhad.

Non Governmental Organisation

Serving in various NGOs has helped RNC to advocate issues, from being a member of the Malaysian Innovation Council, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators and President of the Malaysian Bumiputra Manufacturers and Services Industry Association.

Charity work has always been central to RNC and his wife. Both are active in various charitable organisations from before and continue to do so.

Personal Mottos

Being true to his beliefs and values in hard work, and most importantly leadership by example, has always been the creed that RNC follows. He often thinks of solving issues as opposed to being concerned about drawbacks, pointing fingers or bad press. This is the hallmark of a "how" leader as opposed to an "if" leader. He believes that listening to others and sharing their ideas and experiences is the right step to solving problems.
