KUALA LUMPUR: A trust will be set up to implement the Kampung Baru re-development plan, taking into account the residents’ needs and aspirations.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak gave his assurance that the area’s unique Malay identity and cultural legacy would remain under the re-development programme.

Najib said a trust, which would not have the participation of the private sector, would be created specifically to implement the re-development .

He said the plan would be implemented once the Cabinet had the agreement of the residents.

“The residents will not have to move elsewhere and they will have the right to decide the form of development in their area,” he said after visiting Kampung Baru yesterday.

Najib said he had asked Federal Territories and Urban Well-being minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin to hold a dialogue with the residents soon.

He added the Government would redesignate the land and hand it back to the residents.

Earlier, Najib went on a walk-about in Kampung Baru after attending a meeting at the DBKL towers. He had breakfast at a nearby stall before meeting the residents there.
